The ‘Kids to Kids’ project is run by a group of people who are committed to providing hope to many of Nairobi’s waifs and strays. The site is in the Westland’s district, and is run by the All Saints Anglican cathedral in Nairobi. It is manned by 6 people including a social worker and a qualified teacher who daily provide hot food, non-formal schooling and support to about 75 street kids aged 4-16 years of age.

The first task for the Project Albert Team would be to replace this classroom with something a little better, and so on the day after our arrival work commenced. The replacement structure is more akin to a garden shed, albeit a very grand one.

The decision to purchase a prefabricated construction, which was not based on either financial or time constraints ensured that taxes, as would have been incurred by a purpose built brick construction, could be avoided. The building came as a package of pieces which then had to be assembled in a very specific order.

Sam Harrell is an American living in Kenya who plays a major part in the running of Kids to Kids. He was also very familiar with this type of building having constructed one before. His knowledge proved invaluable and despite Sgt Rob Munday ‘gaffering’ the job, everybody found it remarkable that there were no spare parts left over after assembly. There was a 14 day work estimate from start to finish however, due to the hard work and motivation of the team the new classroom was completed by day 6, handed over on day 8 and in full use by day 10!

Lyneham Infants' donated gifts to the kids at Westland's, which the team distributed to some very grateful recipients. One nice touch is that Lyneham Infants and ‘Kids to Kids’ Westlands are now twinned!
